Background [ ]

She, along with Harkon and Serana, were once devout followers of Molag Bal. Tradition of their cult dictated that the females exist offered to Molag Bal on his summoning 24-hour interval. Being selected as an offering was considered to be an accolade that was non rejected lightly. Few survived the ordeal, and those who did emerged as pure-blooded vampires. Such confluences were known equally the "Daughters of Coldharbour." Equally such, both Valerica and Serana underwent this horrific and degrading ritual.

Prophecy [ ]

Sometime earlier the events of Skyrim, Valerica fled her home of Castle Volkihar with 2 Elder Scrolls after Harkon became obsessed with the Tyranny of the Lord's day prophecy. She believed that vampires should stay in the shadows, otherwise information technology would bring too much attention and ultimately lead to their extinction. She locked Serana and one Elder Scroll in Dimhollow Crypt for her protection and escaped to the Soul Cairn with the other. Outraged by this expose, Lord Harkon immediately ordered everyone within his court to find her, but they unfortunately failed, and centuries later, he eventually gave upwards looking for her. He did, all the same, say that if she returns on her own, or if someone within his court finds her, she volition have to answer for her actions.

Platonic Masters [ ]

When she entered the Soul Cenotaph, she intended to strike a bargain with the rulers of the realm, the Ideal Masters. She requested refuge, and in return, Valerica would provide them with the souls that they craved. The Ideal Masters had other plans, as they valued Valerica's soul much more. They sent their Keepers to kill her, but she was able to retreat into a fortress and go along them at bay. This, however, turned into a stalemate every bit neither side had the upper hand. The Ideal Masters constructed a bulwark around the fortress that could non exist breached in order to contain Valerica and decided to await. As the passage of time has piffling pregnant in the Soul Cairn, the waiting game continued for thousands of years.

Interactions [ ]

Beyond Death [ ]

"Be careful, and keep my girl safe."

The Dragonborn may travel with Serana to the Soul Cairn to face up Valerica and obtain an Elderberry Curl. She explains that the Elderberry Scrolls are merely a means to an cease, and that Serana is the key to the Tyranny of the Lord's day prophecy. It's revealed that Serana's scroll tells of Auriel's Bow, and the scroll in Valerica's possession declares that "The Blood of Coldharbor'due south Girl volition blind the eye of the Dragon."

She offers her roll to the Dragonborn if they defeat the 3 Keepers maintain the barrier. She likewise warns that a fearsome Dragon named Durnehviir is roaming this aeroplane and is charged with overseeing the Keepers.

Once Durnehviir is slain she volition remark near how she thought she would never see the death of that dragon, simply realizes that his physical form is but displaced.

Though Serana spent a lot of time with her mother before her exile, Serana comes to realize, in the Soul Cairn, that Valerica is as bad every bit her married man in the sense that she uses her girl to further her plans.

Kindred Judgment [ ]

After the Dragonborn kills Harkon, it is possible to travel back to the Soul Cairn and tell her Harkon is dead. She will return to her study almost a day later. After Valerica returns to the castle, she will plant new herbs in the garden in the courtyard, provided Garan Marethi is asked to repair the corridor that leads there. The Corridor cannot be repaired if the Dragonborn sides with the Dawnguard.

The Dragonborn tin can ask her to make Bloodcursed Elven Arrows, but she replies that even though Harkon is dead, she wants to stay every bit far away as possible from completing the prophecy that Harkon envisioned.

Dialogue [ ]

Evidence: Beyond Death
Inside the Soul Cairn:

"So how has it come to pass that a vampire of mixed claret is in the company of my girl?" (Or "And then how has it come to laissez passer that a vampire hunter is in the company of my daughter? It pains me to recollect yous'd travel with Serana under the guise of her protector in an endeavour to hunt me down." as a Dawnguard)

This is no ruse. I want to go along her safe. (Simply bachelor as a fellow member of Dawnguard) "Coming from i who murders vampires equally a trade, I find it hard to believe your intentions are noble."
I've been keeping her rubber. (Only available every bit a vampire) "Safe? You call bringing her here safe? Has she explained nothing to you?"
I've saved her from your foolish plan. "I observe your choice of words quite interesting considering that Serana is in far more danger now than she was following my "foolish plan.""
I'chiliad just hither for the Elder Scroll. "Glorious. Serana claims yous're her guardian, yet your first instinct appears to be greed. I see that my daughter is still equally naive as ever."
"Serana has sacrificed everything to foreclose Harkon from completing the prophecy. I would have expected her to explain that to you."
That's why I'm here for the Elder Scroll. "You think I'd take the audacity to place my own daughter in that tomb for the protection of her Elder Whorl alone? The scrolls are just a means to an cease. The fundamental to the Tyranny of the Sun is Serana herself."
What do you mean? "When I fled Castle Volkihar, I fled with two Elderberry Scrolls. The Scroll I assume y'all establish with Serana speaks of Auriel and his arcane weapon, Auriel's Bow. The second curl declares that "The Claret of Coldharbour'due south Daughter will blind the centre of the Dragon.""
How does Serana fit in? "Like myself, Serana was a human once. Nosotros were devout followers of Lord Molag Bal. Tradition dictates the females be offered to Molag Bal on his summoning mean solar day. Few survive the ordeal. Those that do sally every bit a pure-blooded vampire. We call such confluences the "Daughters of Coldharbour.""
The Tyranny of the Sun requires Serana's claret? "Now you're showtime to see why I wanted to protect Serana, and why I've kept the other Elder Coil as far from her as possible."
Are yous saying Harkon means to kill her? "If Harkon obtained Auriel's Bow and Serana'southward blood was used to taint the weapon, the Tyranny of the Dominicus would exist consummate. In his eyes, she'd be dying for the skillful of all vampires."
I would never let that to happen. "And how exactly do y'all plan on completing the prophecy without the death of my daughter?"
I'll kill Harkon. "If you believe that, then you're a bigger fool than I originally suspected. Don't you think I weighed that option before I enacted my plans?"
I'll need your help. "Accept you been listening to me? Like Serana, I'yard a pure-blooded vampire. My presence on Tamriel is as much of a danger as hers."
Perhaps her death is destined. "No! I will non allow that [sic] [Practise not change this to that to. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.] happen. The Elderberry Scrolls but tell of events that might be, not events that will exist."
And Serana'due south stance in this? "Yous care zilch for Serana or our plight. You lot run into the Tyranny of the Sun as your chance at deification, and like Harkon you won't hesitate to destroy anything that stands in your path."
Serana believes me, why won't you? "Serana?"
Serana underwent this ritual willingly? "Information technology was expected of her, only every bit information technology was expected of me. Being selected as an offering to Molag Bal is an honor. She wouldn't take dared plow her back on that."
Coldharbour? "Information technology's what some phone call the domain of Molag Bal. His place in Oblivion."

Afterward Valerica speaks with Serana again:

"Your intentions are yet somewhat unclear to me. Just for Serana'south sake, I'll assist you in whatever way that I can."

Practise you have the Elder Scroll with you? "Yes. I've kept it safely secured hither ever since I was imprisoned. Fortunately, you're in a position to breach the barrier that surrounds these ruins."
What exercise nosotros demand to do? "Yous need to locate the tallest of the rocky spires that surround these ruins. At their bases, the barrier's energy is beingness fatigued from unfortunate souls that take been exiled here. Destroy the Keepers that are tending them, and information technology should bring the barrier downward."
We'll return soon. "One more give-and-take of warning. There'due south a dragon that calls itself Durnehviir roaming the Cairn. Be wary of him. The Ideal Masters accept charged him with overseeing the Keepers, and will undoubtedly arbitrate if you're perceived as a threat."
If I go out the Soul Cenotaph, can I safely return? "Equally you lot've been traveling in the Soul Cairn, your body has become attuned to it. Permit's but say a tiny role of you rubbed off on it, and in its place, a bit of the Soul Cairn filled the void. You should find no difficulty using the portal any longer."
How did yous become imprisoned here? "When I entered the Soul Cairn, I had intended to struck a bargain with the Ideal Masters, the custodians of this identify."
What was the bargain? "I requested refuge in the Soul Cairn, and in commutation, I would provide the Platonic Masters the souls that they craved. If I had foreseen the value they placed on my own soul, I would never take come here."
They tricked you. "The Ideal Masters unleashed their Keepers and sent them to destroy me. Fortunately, I was able to hold them at bay and retreat into these ruins."
You became trapped. "Unfortunately, aye. Since the Keepers weren't able to claim my soul, they had their minions construct a barrier that I'd never be able to breach."
Y'all've been imprisoned here for all this time? "Time has very petty meaning to me. Consequently, it has piffling meaning to the Platonic Masters as well. I suppose yous could phone call this the ultimate waiting game, each watching the other to run across which will requite in."
Who are the Ideal Masters? "I know very little about them. They're mystic entities that lord over the Soul Cairn, decision-making every aspect from its textile to its advent."
What do they resemble? "Well, some necromancers believe they are the crystalline structures dotting the Soul Cairn. I believe there's more to it than that."
How so? "I call up they transcend what we perceive equally a physical form. Peradventure they were one time corporeal beings, but they've obviously reached a point where they no longer crave a tangible presence."
And the crystals? "Conduits through which the Ideal Masters speak to their underlings and feed on their victims."
Why would they require sustenance? "The Platonic Chief's weakness is their insatiable hunger for pure souls. Information technology's the reason for the Soul Cairn's existence, and the only leverage a necromancer has when bargaining with them."
What practise the Masters provide in return? "The ability to summon powerful undead guardians as one would conjure an atronach or daedra. However, the majority of necromancers that are foolish plenty to enter into deal with the Ideal Masters air current upwards here... as harvested souls."
Why oasis't you pursued the prophecy? "Harkon's vision is a world plunged in eternal darkness where the vampire tin flourish and never again fearfulness the "tyranny of the sun." What he fails to realize is how much attention would exist chosen to our kind if the prophecy came to fruition."
What sort of attention? "If eternal night cruel, in that location are many who wouldn't correspond it. They would raise armies in attempts to render things to normal. The social club of the day would be our destruction until every last vampire was hunted downwards and eliminated."
And then you prefer living in the shadows. "I exercise. It'due south how the vampire has survived for millennia, and the simply way nosotros can proceed to survive in the future."

"Exist conscientious, and go along my daughter safety."

Afterward destroying the Keepers:

"You managed to destroy all three Keepers? Very impressive."

Are you able to give u.s.a. the scroll now? "Yes. Please, follow me. Keep watch for Durnehviir. With the prison's bulwark down, he'south almost certain to investigate."

"Follow me and stay close. Keep your eyes open for Durnehviir."

Upon defeating Durnehviir:

"Forgive my astonishment, but I never thought I'd witness the death of that dragon."

What makes you say that? "Volumes written on Durnehviir allege that he can't be slain by normal means. Information technology appears they were mistaken. Unless..."
Go along. "The soul of a dragon is every bit resilient as its possessor's scaly hide. Information technology'due south possible that your killing blow has merely displaced Durnehviir'southward physical grade while he reconstitutes himself."
How long volition that take? "Minutes? Hours? Years? I can't even begin to guess. I suggest nosotros don't wait around to discover out. At present, let's get y'all the Elderberry Curlicue and you can be on your mode."

If approached once again:

"What did you want?"
"The Elder Ringlet is just ahead."

Upon retrieving the scroll:

"Now that you've retrieved the Elderberry Scroll, you should be on your way."

You lot're staying here? "I have no choice. As I told you earlier, I'm a Daughter of Coldharbour. If I return to Tamriel, that increases Harkon'south likelihood of bringing the Tyranny of the Sun to fruition."
We'll render when we can. "I capeesh your business concern for me, merely Serana is all that I care about. Yous must keep her safe at all price."
We could use your assistance in Tamriel. "As much as it pains me to send y'all and Serana back lone, I can't take the risk."
Nosotros may never return. "After what I've put Serana through, I would understand if she never wished to run across me once again. I leave that decision in your hands."
"Recall that Harkon isn't to be trusted. No matter what he promises, he'll deceive you in order to get what he wants. And promise me you lot'll keep my daughter rubber. She's the only affair of value I have left."

"Accept the scroll, and so be on your way."

If soul trapped for entry into the Soul Cenotaph:

"Now that you've retrieved the Elderberry Curlicue, you should exist on your mode."

Can you aid go my soul dorsum? "Then my daughter applied some of the lessons I taught her well-nigh necromancy, did she? Don't worry, I call up I can help you."
Skillful, I could utilise all the help I can get. "Your soul essence was trapped inside a jewel. When you and Serana entered the Soul Cairn, information technology was "given" to the Ideal Masters equally payment. You simply demand to retrieve the gem. The moment you touch information technology, your soul essence will exist restored."
Any idea where it could be? "There's an offering altar non terribly far from here. I'k willing to bet that the gem you're looking for is there. Is at that place anything else? Could be your terminal hazard."
Y'all're staying here? "I have no choice. Equally I told you before, I'chiliad a Daughter of Coldharbour. If I return to Tamriel, that increases Harkon'southward likelihood of bringing the Tyranny of the Dominicus to fruition."
We'll return when we tin can. "I appreciate your concern for me, but Serana is all that I care about. You must keep her prophylactic at all cost."
Nosotros could use your help in Tamriel. "As much as it pains me to send you and Serana back alone, I can't have the risk."
We may never return. "Afterwards what I've put Serana through, I would understand if she never wished to come across me again. I get out that determination in your hands."
"Recollect that Harkon isn't to be trusted. No thing what he promises, he'll deceive you in order to become what he wants. And promise me you'll keep my girl prophylactic. She'southward the merely affair of value I have left."

"Accept the ringlet, so exist on your way."

If approached again:

"Did you take anything to enquire before you lot depart?"

Why don't you come back with us? "Fifty-fifty if I could, it would only serve to hinder your efforts. Harkon would likely sense my return to Tamriel. The terminal thing yous need right now is a trail for him to follow."
You lot said "even if I could." Why? "Like Serana, I am a Daughter of Coldharbour, an vampire offspring of Molag Bal. My presence on Tamriel would simply double the gamble that Harkon could complete the prophecy."
And if Harkon failed? "The only manner I'd even consider returning to Tamriel was if Harkon were not merely to fail, but to be destroyed."
Yous hate him that much? "You must empathise he's no longer the human I married all that time agone. He's obsessed... insane. Everyone around him fears him as they would a rabid dog. For all of this to cease, he must dice."

"Farewell. Recollect that Harkon'due south non to be trusted."

Outside the prison:

I could use help with the crystals around here. "Absolutely. I've spent a great deal of time perfecting an extract that increases the authority of soul husks. If you wanted to bring some to me, I'd be happy to provide you lot with some of the extract. It should help resist the draining aureola of the crystals."

How many practise y'all demand? "Hmmm, I'd say v of them would exist enough."

Afterwards retrieving the husks:

I have five soul husks hither. "Okay. Hope this helps." (Or "All right. Here's the extract.")

Show: Kindred Judgment
Inside the Soul Cenotaph:

"You appear to take something on your mind. What is it?"

Harkon is dead. "What? Are you certain?"
He died by my mitt. "Then I see zilch preventing my return to Tamriel. Allow me to gather some of my things and I'll head dorsum to Castle Volkihar. And from the bottom of my eye, I thank you."

If approached again:

"I'll return to Castle Volkihar as before long as I'm finished gathering my things."

Inside the castle:

"It might take decades to restore the castle to its sometime glory... but I appear to have plenty of time."
"Help yourself to anything you need in my laboratory."

What will you lot practice now? "Well, I call up it's time I got back to my piece of work as an alchemist. The Soul Cenotaph will offering a unique opportunity to continue my studies, and I intend to complete my enquiry. In the meantime, if in that location are whatever potions you might need, experience gratuitous to help yourself."
Can you give me Bloodcursed Arrows? "I'm sorry, I don't experience comfy giving them to yous. I empathize what y'all did for Serana and for me, simply the prophecy never sat well with me, and I don't want to exist a part of information technology. I'm sad."

Conversations [ ]

Valerica, Vampire

Serana: "Mother? Female parent!"
Valerica: "Maker... it can't be. Serana?"
Serana: "Is it really you? I tin't believe information technology! How do nosotros get inside? We have to talk."
Valerica: "Serana? What are you doing here? Where'due south your male parent?"
Serana: "He doesn't know we're here. I don't have time to explain."
Valerica: "I must have failed. Harkon'south institute a style to decipher the prophecy, hasn't he."
Serana: "No, yous've got it all wrong. Nosotros're here to complete the prophecy our mode, not his."
Valerica: "Look a moment... you've brought a stranger hither? Have you lost your mind?"
Serana: "No, you lot don't..."
Valerica: "You. Come up forward. I would speak with you."
[Later talking with Valerica]
Valerica: "This stranger may call himself ("herself" if Dragonborn is female person) vampire, but he ("she" if Dragonborn is female) knows nothing of our struggle, Why should I entrust yous to him ("her" if Dragonborn is female person) ?"
Serana: "This "stranger" has done more for me in the brief time I've known him ("her" if Dragonborn is female) than y'all've done in centuries!"
Valerica: "How dare you! I gave up everything I cared about to protect you from that fanatic y'all call a father!"
Serana: "Yep, he'south a fanatic... he's changed. Only he's yet my father. Why tin can't you understand how that makes me feel?"
Valerica: "Oh, Serana. If you'd only open your eyes. The moment your father discovers your role in the prophecy, that he needs your claret, you lot'd be in terrible danger."
Serana: "So to protect me you decided to shut me away from everything I cared about? You lot never asked me if hiding me in that tomb was the all-time course of activeness, y'all just expected me to follow yous blindly. Both of you were obsessed with your ain paths. Your motivations might have been different, merely in the end, I'k however but a pawn to you, too. I want the states to be a family unit again. Merely I don't know if we tin can ever have that. Maybe we don't deserve that kind of happiness. Maybe it isn't for us. But we have to stop him. Before he goes besides far. And to exercise that, we need the Elder Scroll."
Valerica: "I'm sorry, Serana. I didn't know... I didn't come across. I've allowed my hatred of your father to enstrange u.s.a. for too long. Forgive me. If you desire the Elder Scroll, it's yours."

Durnehviir

Valerica: "Information technology'southward Durnehviir... he'southward here! Defend yourselves!"
